Work for Clients
Attorney Kathryn Martin is licensed in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and concentrates her practice on comprehensive estate planning, including wills, trusts, probate avoidance during life and after death, business and tax planning, and asset protection, as well as trust and estate administration. Prior to joining Schlossberg LLC in 2021, Kathryn worked for the First Justice of the Suffolk County Probate and Family Court, and then the next seven years at a private Trust and Estates firm on the South Shore. The hands-on probate court exposure in conjunction with extensive experience creating and executing comprehensive estate plans allows Kathryn to offer a thorough approach to estate planning, as well as insight into probate litigation and how to avoid such litigation.
Kathryn regularly works with a diverse range of clients – from young families and professionals seeking a foundational plan, to persons in the asset accumulation phase and those of high net worth having additional intricate planning opportunities, as well as retirees and elders – to establish personalized estate plans that are tailored to their particular goals and unique circumstances. These plans commonly address probate avoidance, mitigating tax liabilities and exposure, business succession planning, supplemental / special needs planning, and asset protection, while ensuring assets are left to persons and/or charities of the client’s choosing, according to terms that align with their wishes. Examples of the revocable and irrevocable trust planning techniques Kathryn utilizes to address these issues often include Qualified Terminable Interest Property (QTIP) or “By-Pass” Trusts, Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts, Charitable Trusts, Grantor Retained Annuity/Uni-Trusts (GRAT/GRUTs), Spousal Lifetime Access Trusts (SLATs), Generation-Skipping Trusts, Supplemental / Special Needs Trusts, Spendthrift Trusts, and Qualified Personal Residence Trusts (QPRT), among others.
Kathryn is also well-versed in the preparation of estate tax returns for those who have taxable estates in Massachusetts / Rhode Island.
